A Phuket MP for the opposition People's Party, not Pheu Thai, known in Thai coverage as "Lawyer Kaeng." Bangkok Post reports the DSI was preparing to summon him over transactions tied to several companies and a law office.¹ No charge has been filed. A similar complaint arose earlier this year over another People's Party MP.¹

Two figures are circulating, and they measure different things. Bangkok Post reports Somchat "linked as a shareholder and authorised director to more than 28 companies," and separately "suspected of being linked to more than 30 firms."¹ Thai coverage adds a value: over THB 100 million in land and condos.² The 28 is a role count. The 30-plus is a suspicion count. Neither adds to the other.

What Have the Party and Parliament Said? #

The People's Party welcomes scrutiny, but not a name released ahead of the process. MP Karunpol Thiensuwan said: "What concerns us is that we learned from the media that the DSI has not issued a summons and has not found any wrongdoing, yet the name of our MP was released as if he had already committed an offence."¹³ The House Police Affairs Committee, chaired by Bhumjaithai MP Watcharapong Khuwijitsuwan, said on 19 August it would call DSI officials to explain.⁴
